Statement on the passing of Jack Layton | Print |  E-mail
Aug/22/2011

Jack died this morning.  I can barely believe it.

Canada has lost a man who was incredibly proud of his country.  Someone who believed in the potential of his fellow citizens and what they could accomplish.  Someone who was willing to stand up for all of us and advocate on our behalf.

Everyone knows Jack was passionate about his beliefs.  When he spoke of equality and opportunity, you knew he meant every word…and he meant them for you.  Jack was incredibly interested in people, and loved to hear your personal stories.  He celebrated your success and shared your fears.  When you told him of your struggles, it strengthened his resolve to make things better.

Jack may have been a politician we all saw on television, but he was also the guy who could talk to just about anyone.  All it took was a handshake and that famous smile.

There will be many tributes to Jack’s political achievements.  I am lucky to have known him as a friend.  He was, and will continue to be, an inspiration.

We lost an icon today.

I miss him already.

Rosario Marchese statement in support of public libraries | Print |  E-mail
Jul/28/2011

Toronto is incredibly lucky to have its public library system.  A treasured resource, our library branches are the centre of our communities and the places where lifelong learning truly exists.  It is in our libraries that children discover the magic of reading and immerse themselves in new, undiscovered worlds.

It is the place where newcomers and established citizens alike can learn to speak and read a new language. Our libraries are resources for students of all ages, giving everyone in Toronto equal access to the wealth of global knowledge. The services provided by our libraries are important for those seeking a stronger future through a search for better employment, greater education or increased literacy.

The mayor suggests we cannot afford the library system.

I have to ask: With all the resources it makes available to the public; with all the programming it does for children, young adults and newcomers; with its efforts to increase literacy; and with its mission to preserve and promote access to knowledge, experience, information and ideas…

Can Toronto afford not to have this outstanding public library system?
